Liverpool industrialist and tunnel-builder Joseph Williamson (1796-1840) hosted a dinner party at his Edge Hill townhouse. The esteemed guests were served only a simple meal of porridge and hard biscuits, prompting many disgruntled diners to leave early. Williamson described those who remained as 'my real friends', and invited them to stay for a lavish feast which awaited in the next room.
